East Jerusalem İs The Capital Of Palestine
Prof. Ahmet Davutoğlu’s statement on Israel’s sanctions on the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Palestinian people – July 19, 2017
“The Israeli state is carrying out one of the most systematic occupations in history in front of the eyes of all humanity, usurping Muslims’ land centimeter by centimeter. Within this context, it is unacceptable that the repressive and murderous policies that increase day by day in Jerusalem have now reached the al-Aqsa Mosque.
What a pity that while Israel is carrying out these crimes, its guarantee for this crimes is that Islamic countries stuck in their own problems, as we have seen in the Gulf crisis. Israel will have been reassured by the lack of any meaningful response to the murders, bans, and repression that have continued to increase around the al-Aqsa Mosque and East Jerusalem in recent weeks.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which was founded because of Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque, must break its silence. As the biggest umbrella organization for Islamic nations, it must meet as soon as possible to search for solutions over current events in Jerusalem. The internal problems of the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council and the conflicts among their members must be put aside and we must focus on our common problem—Jerusalem. No-one must repeat the mistakes of the past and bear the shame of remaining spectators due to internal probles as Israel does whatever it likes with the holy places of the Muslims.
No-one can shirk responsibility if they allow a similar occupation of the al-Aqsa Mosque as we have seen of the Prophet Abraham Holy Mosque in the city of Al Khalil, Hebron.
Rulers may have different priorities. The Muslim peoples’ priority is Jerusalem.
Rulers may forget. The Muslim peoples will never forget Jerusalem.
I call on everyone so that the al-Aqsa Mosque will not remain without a congregation this Friday. Islamic countries must put their meaningless quotidian problems to one side and show a common front on the issue of Jerusalem.
I call on all the leaders, civil society organizations and intellectuals in the world who respect international law, human rights and the freedoms of belief and worship. All together we are paying the price for staying silent at Israel’s crude, reckless murders and human rights violations.
The United States of America must see how large the problem can grow when its administration does not oversee the balance between the two sides, and must learn a lesson from what is happening. Israel has abused every form of support it has been given and has made its own supporters regret it. A reckless partisanship in favor of Israel has not only left this problem, unsolved for years, even more intractable, but it will also poison even further the reputation of the west and in particular the U.S. in the eyes of the Muslim peoples.
In this context, the United Nations must act and all mechanisms must be put into action, including the Jerusalem Commission, of which Turkey is a member.
Everyone in a position of power in the Islamic world or on the international stage must do what they are able; steps must be taken to avoid the emergence of uncontrollable crises.
The Middle East peace process may be seen as an issue between Palestine and Israel. While the refugee issue is the common responsibility of all humanity, it might be expected that Arab societies and Israel would be able to solve this between themselves. But Jerusalem is not just Jerusalem. History has shown many times that what has happened in the confines of the al-Aqsa Mosque will not remain limited to that place.
I have the deepest respect for my dear Palestinian brothers and sisters who have—sometimes single-handedly—looked after and protected Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque for decades at the expense of their own lives. Their lonely but honorable struggle will surely find its just reward in the presence of God. They must know that they are not alone.
Israel has betrayed the history of its own Jews, who lived under Muslim rule from the conquest of Jerusalem by Muslims in 636 AD onwards. 830 years after Saladin brought order again to Jerusalem, 500 years since Jerusalem was turned over to the Ottomans and a full 100 years since they withdrew from Jerusalem, Israel is trying to turn this holy city of three religions completely Jewish.
Facilitating peace in the region and protecting the rights of our Palestinian brothers and sisters is history’s legacy to us.
East Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine.
The al-Aqsa Mosque is a Muslim holy place.
Jerusalem is the spirit of the history, and it is the shared name of peace.
We must stand hand in hand against the destruction of the spirit of history and the murdering of peace.
